Message from His Excellency U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, on the occasion of the seventieth Anniversary of the United Nations (24-10-2015)

On this auspicious occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, I, on behalf of the people of Myanmar and on my own, would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the United Nations for its contributions and achievements in making the world a better and safer place to live.
On this day seventy years ago, the United Nations was born as a means of maintaining international peace and security, promoting friendly relations among nations and achieving international cooperation on solving global issues such as the social, political, economic and environment issues that affect us all. Additionally, promoting and encouraging respect for human rights has always been high on its agenda. It is irrefutable that the United Nations has largely succeeded in its mission of implementing these noble goals.
Today, the United Nations represents all the peoples of the world. As the largest inter-governmental organisation of the world, the United Nations’ role in the global affairs is irreplaceable. The active participation of the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in maintaining international peace and security as well as its relentless efforts in fighting poverty around the world are also indisputable. Myanmar welcomes and expresses its unequivocal support to the Post-2015 Development Agenda which constitutes a platform for eradicating poverty and ensuring a sustainable future for the generations to come.
Despite these efforts, millions of people around the world continue to face challenges in the areas of peace and security. “The UN at 70 — A New Commitment to Action”, the theme of the United Nations for this year is very relevant and timely. Therefore, the United Nations at its 70 should firmly commit to overcoming these difficulties while respecting the interests of all its member nations. Myanmar will work jointly with all member States in supporting the Organisation in taking up these remaining challenges. I am confident that the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals will be successfully implemented.
At this auspicious occasion, may I invite all member states to join hands with us to make the United Nations more stronger organisation and better world.
