Flocks of migratory birds such as Golden-swan, Teal, Eurasian coot, Moorhen, Mae Nyo, and Eurasian curlew have come to the villages and lakes in Meiktila Township, Mandalay Region, to spend the winter starting from late January.
“Although it is not seen the intentional capturing and killing of wintering birds, they are being captured with nets in the northern part of Kalama Kyun village,” said Ko Myo Win Aung, an amateur bird watcher in Pauk Chaung ward, who added that he only saw a sign forbidding the killing of the birds wintering near Lake Meiktila. He said it is necessary to educate people not to catch migratory birds and conduct field inspections.
Among the migratory birds that winter near the Lake Meiktila every year, the rare species such as black-winged stilts also include and these wintering birds usually come to the site from early November to late February.—Chan Thar (Meiktila) (Translated by Ei Phyu Phyu Aung)
