A recent report by the Facebook page “Khit Thit” has been flagged as false, claiming that over 40 prisoners transferred to Thayawady Central Prison were physically assaulted by prison staff, resulting in head and body injuries, as well as being subjected to confinement and shackling. The report, published on 19 August, was identified as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that there are no political prisoners at the Thayawady Central Prison, only individuals who have been legally sentenced for violating existing laws. The transfer of 300 inmates from Insein Central Prison to Thayawady Central Prison involved routine searches to prevent the entry of prohibited items, and no unprovoked assaults took place during the transfer. Furthermore, no prisoners with head or other injuries were found in the prison hospital.
Additionally, it was clarified that no punishments for solitary confinement were imposed. Instead, certain inmates who required special security measures were temporarily separated for observation for up to one week. Educational sessions were conducted to ensure compliance with prison regulations, and no incidents of physical abuse or torture were reported. Any misconduct by prison staff would be subject to legal action. The Facebook page “Khit Thit” was accused of spreading false information to create public misunderstanding. — Kyaw Moe Aung/KZL
