The International Day of Forests event in progress in Nay Pyi Taw.

The Department of Forest Research in Nay Pyi Taw held a ceremony to celebrate International Day of Forests yesterday morning, and Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi attended and addressed the ceremony.
While addressing the ceremony, the Union Minister highlighted the sustainability of forests and environmental services which play an important role in tackling environmental issues, adding the formation of the International Day of Forests. He stressed the need to emphasize the sustainable conservation and systematic exploitation of forest resources in line with this year’s theme “Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption”.
He said plans are underway to expand nature reserves to 10 per cent of the country’s area and permanent forest areas to 30 per cent of the country’s area in order to reduce deforestation and make forest sustainable. The government has also stopped logging and reduced production, as well as log exports, and is working to increase the production of value-added sawmills for the full and efficient use of the products and to develop wood-based industries.
He also called on relevant departments, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector, and the people to work together for long-term sustainability and systematic logging.
In the afternoon, the Union Minister attended the coordination meeting on the review of the implementation completed by the State/Region Department of Forest in the 2021-2022 financial year and for the successful implementation of the activities to be carried out in the 2022-2023 financial year. — MNA
