MoCRD celebrates 100th International Day of Cooperatives

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development marks the 100th International Day of Cooperatives in Nay Pyi Taw on 2 July 2022.

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development celebrated the 100th International Day of Cooperatives in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
During the ceremony, Union Minister U Hla Moe said the International Co-operative Alliance-ICA was organized on 19 August 1895 in London and celebrated the ceremonies starting in 1923 and now it reaches 100 years. The Myanmar Central Co-operative Association joined the ICA on 7 September 1993. In 1995, the United Nations designated the first Saturday of July as International Cooperative Day to promote awareness of cooperative activities, international unity, short-term economic profit, equality and prosperity of the world.
The cooperative associations have created job opportunities for over 12 per cent of the world population accounting for more than 280 million people.
He also highlighted the significant activities of cooperative associations in business, natural environment conservation, job opportunities, food safety and security, financial assistance and other matters.
The Cooperative Department has set effective objectives, aims, policies, procedures and eight action plans and organized 39,399 associations so far. There should be proper interdepartmental cooperation to develop the cooperatives by following the principles, ethics and essences of the cooperatives.
The Union minister mentioned the theme for this year’s International Day of Cooperatives “Cooperatives Build a Better World” and called on the officials to promote the image of Myanmar’s cooperatives while the international cooperatives are following the principles based on shared moral ethics and values.
Then, Myanmar Central Co-operative Association Chairman U Aung Phyu briefed the activities of the association.
After that, the message sent by ICA was read out and the ceremony played a video clip honouring the International Day of Cooperatives. — MNA/GNLM
