MoEA, MoE discuss appointment of ethnic language teachers with more salary

The Ministry of Ethnic Affairs held the coordination meeting on the appointment of ethnic language teachers and the increase of teachers’ salaries yesterday morning in Nay Pyi Taw following the COVID-19 prevention health directives.
Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Saw Tun Aung Myint, Deputy Minister for Education U Zaw Win, Deputy Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Zaw Aye Maung, the Permanent Secretary, Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General and officials attended the meeting.
At the meeting, the Union Minister said Chairman of the State Administration Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing instructed to provide more appropriate support to the teachers, including teachers teaching ethnic literature, and to improve the quality of teachers in ethnic areas for higher education.
The second meeting of the Ethnic Affairs and Public Management and Services Committee held at the Ministry of Defence decided to provide more salary to the language teacher and teaching assistance as the teachers in the basic education schools because ethnic nationalities have become weaker in their respective language skills.
The Ministry of Ethnic Affairs scrutinizes the full-time teaching teachers and ethnic language teachers’ applications to assist in teaching not only ethnic languages but also school subjects for ethnic nationalities, and the Ministry of Education appoints them. The qualified teachers are also being appointed as permanent staff. A total of 5,161 teachers (4,783 teaching assistants and 378 language teachers in the 2017-2018 academic year and a total of 7,110 teachers (6,935 teaching assistants and 175 language teachers) were appointed. The Union Minister said teaching assistants are paid 4,800 kyats per day while the ethnic language teachers received only 30,000 kyats, adding that ethnic nationalities are becoming less proficient in their ethnic languages due to the lack of people to teach.
He called on the Ministry of Education officials to seriously consider the recruitment of more ethnic language teaching assistant/language teachers and increase salaries and allowances to ensure the preservation of ethnic languages and literature.
The Deputy Minister for Education said his ministry is ready for cooperation for ethnic language teaching, adding that more funds will be asked to increase the salaries of ethnic language teachers. The meeting attendees participated in the discussion to appoint language teachers and provide more pay. The Union Minister coordinated the meeting.—MNA
