Myanmar ships onions to external markets beyond self-sufficiency. It is commonly grown in Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions.

The price of monsoon onions peaked at K1,700 per viss (a viss equals 1.6 kilogrammes), according to onion traders from the Mandalay market.
Those monsoon onions are abundantly supplied by Myingyan, Pakokku and Monywa. Soon, quality onions from Myittha town will enter the market. The price is up by K350-500 per viss compared to the year-ago period. The prevailing price of onions stands at K1,700 per viss, according to the Soe Win Myint depot.
“Large quantities of the monsoon onions are flowing into the Mandalay market and fetching a high price. The onion yield is high as well this year. Brisk domestic and foreign demand is seen. Last year, a lack of foreign demand drove the price down drastically. Growers faced market fallouts. At present, neighbouring Bangladesh purchases onions on a regular basis. Moreover, onions are also delivered to Thailand markets. The strong foreign demand and local consumption elevated the price. The growers are doing a roaring trade this year,” he elaborated the owner of the depot.
