More than 4,900 tonnes of tea leaves exported within one year

Myanmar’s tea which is in the growth stage at present are being exported to South Korea, Germany, China, EU countries and countries in Asia and about 4,900 tonnes of tea leaves were exported between 1 October 2020 and 30 September 2021.
More than 200 tonnes of tea leaves were shipped and more than 4,000 tonnes via land border checkpoints. The green tea is being marketed to South Korea and Germany, while the dried ones from Shan State are being exported to China and some ASEAN countries.
Assistant Director of the Kanbawza Trade Centre, Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization, Ministry of Commerce, said, “We focus on export promotion. In Shan State, there is a tea plantation project which provides technology to farmers as alternative development. With better methods, production has increased and more advanced products are exported.”
Dried tea leaves are mainly exported to China. Pickled tea leaves which are widely consumed domestically are now starting to be exported, he added. As the main focus of the Organization is to boost foreign trade, Myanmar’s commercial attaches in 13 countries are working to expand trade and export markets for Myanmar products, he said.
Myanmar tea is grown mainly in southern Shan State. Pinlaung, Pindaya, and Ywa ngan dried tea leaves are popular and Kokang dried tea leaves are being exported. According to the tea growing area, there are three types of tea: Chinese Tea; Assam Tea; Indochina Tea. Assam tea is a small plant that grows to a height of 30 to 50 feet, with large leaves that often show veins. Indochina tea is almost as thick as Assam, and the leaves are yellow or brown. It usually grows light green.
The United States of America, Russia, the UK, Viet Nam, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Morocco, Germany, China, and Hong Kong are the biggest importers of tea leaves while China, India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Poland, Germany, the UAE, UK, Japan and China (Taipei) are the biggest tea leaves’ exporters. The largest producers of tea in the world are China, India, Japan, Kenya, Turkey, Myanmar, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Sri Lanka, and Iran.
