MoTC celebrates 145th anniversary of Myanma Railways

The 145th Anniversary of Myanma Railways under the Ministry of Transport and Communications took place at Pobbathiri Mingalar Hall, Nay Pyi Taw Railways Station yesterday morning.
Myanmar started running the first railway line on 1 May 1877 on the 161-mile Yangon-Pyay section. The name was changed to Burma Railway Company, Railways Board, and Railway Corporation over the years, and on 1 April 1989, the name was changed from Railway Corporation to Myanma Railways.
At the ceremony, Union Minister for Transport and Communications Admiral Tin Aung San said during the 145-year journey of Myanma Railways, various systems have changed, but the transportation needs of the country is still met due to the perseverance and dedication of the Myanma Railways staff who carried out diligent work.
He said it is necessary to rehabilitate railway sections and improve the quality and standard of carriages and locomotives for the comfort of rail passengers. He added the need to think ahead to use the electric train system in the future, to gradually reduce the need to buy materials required for the construction of locomotives and carriages and replay them locally, to establish a Research and Development Centre. He said the aim is to ensure the safe and smooth transportation of passengers and goods in line with the motto of the Ministry of Transport and Communications “Transport and Communicate for the benefits of the people”.
Afterwards, Union Minister Admiral Tin Aung San presented additional wards and certificates to eight officers/staff members who were awarded the honorary medals for their outstanding performance during the one year term of the State Administration Council and staff who excelled in various courses.—MNA
