MoTC plans to upgrade 3 domestic airports

“The ministry is planning to upgrade three domestic airports — Heho, Mawlamyine and Kawthaung airports,” said Union Minister U Thant Sin Maung of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
Among these three, Heho airport will be upgraded jointly by Kanbawza company (KBZ group) and Japan company. The minister stated the plan in the fourth-year performances report of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The domestic airports will be upgraded in cooperation with the private sector, he added. To upgrade the Mawlamyine airport, the economic committee has granted permission and an MoU will be signed. KBZ Group and Japan company are also going to sign an MOU to upgrade the Heho airport.
Moreover, the ministry is also planning for the chartered flights to be able to land in Nyaung U and Thandwe airports.
Moreover, Myanmar and Japan governments can reach a deal this year to construct Hantharwady International Airport, said the minister.
Yangon International Airport has the accommodation capacity restraints such as having only one airport runway. This being so, it is difficult for the huge airplanes to land on it. That is why we need to build a new international airport, stressed the minister.
Japan JGC company, Singapore Yoongnam Holding company and Changi Airport International company won the tender in 2014. But their tender period expired in 2018 before they could start their project. —Aye Cho (Translated by Hay Mar)
