Myanmar attends UNWTO Asia-Pacific workshop on measuring sustainability of tourism (MST)

The UNWTO Asia-Pacific Workshop on Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST) was held virtually on 14 and 15 December in collaboration with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Department of Tourism of the Philippines, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea.
Senior officials and subject experts led by Union minister for Hotels and Tourism Dr Htay Aung attended the virtual workshop. Myanmar is a member state of the UNWTO and the Pacific-Asia Tourism Association.
The workshop aimed to introduce Asia-Pacific member states to the use of statistical data to measure the sustainability of tourism, to raise awareness of the importance of tourism sustainability and to discuss indicators and strategies of the sustainable development of the tourism industry.
The Chief of Environment Economic Accounting Section of the Division led the discussion on the importance of measuring the sustainability of tourism in the Sustainable Development Agenda. During the discussion, the project of the UNWTO/UNSD, which measures indicators of sustainable development goals and the sustainability of tourism, was explained.
The discussions were also held on topics such as the link between tourism policies and indicators, measuring the sustainability of tourism, measuring the sustainability of tourism with marine data, estimating water resources and energy consumption in the Philippine tourism industry, developing a roadmap for measuring the sustainability of tourism in Fiji, expansion of Samoa’s eco-tourism statistics, Thailand’s linking business and environmental tourism information. — MNA
