Myanmar Ethnics Culture Festival aimed to promote the ethnics’ culture and tourism will not be celebrated in 2021 for the third time because of the pandemic, according to the Myanmar Ethnic Entrepreneurs Association (MEEA).
“Myanmar confirmed its first case in late March after the festival. The festival is usually celebrated in January and February.
“We skipped the celebration of the festival this year. Yangon also could not control the disease till November. However, the COVID-19 prevention vaccines will be available next year.
“Then, we can launch the festival if we get permission from the government. Even though we could not launch the festival, we are planning to sell ethnic products online. Our association is making arrangements to change the federation into the association,” said Min Banya San, the general secretary of the MEEA.
The first Myanmar Ethnic Culture Festival was organized by Kachin State Ethnic Entrepreneurs’ Association from 25 to 30 January 2019 while the second Myanmar Ethnic Culture Festival was organized by Kayah State Ethnic Entrepreneurs’ Association from 1 to 7 February 2020. The festival kicks off at the Kyaikkasan Sports Ground in Tamway Township, Yangon Region, annually, with more than 1.2 million visitors.
The First Myanmar Ethnics Culture Festival was launched with spending of K1.3 billion, including capital among K50 million from the Ministry of Ethnic Affair’s Union Fund and other financial donations of MEEA, 14 Ethnic Entrepreneurs’ Associations, Culture and Literature Associations and State government fund. In contrast, the Second Myanmar Ethnics Culture Festival was launched with a spending of over K1.1 billion from Kayah State government and Kayah State Ethnic Entrepreneurs’ Association. —Thant Zin Win (Translated by Hay Mar)
