Myanmar has been planning to export maize to the India market as Myanmar’s maize export to Thailand with duty-free privilege has ended, according to the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association.
Thailand gives the green light for maize imports under zero tariff (with Form-D) between 1 February and 31 August. However, Thailand imposes a maximum tax rate of 73 per cent on maize imports to protect the rights of their growers if the maize is imported during the maize season of Thailand.
Myanmar has been preparing to export maize to India’s market to avoid price loss after the end of the maize export period to Thailand.
Myanmar delivered maize to Thailand through the Kawthoung-Ranong border. Myanmar’s monsoon maize cultivation acres declined in some areas, resulting in low output. Myanmar has steady demand from foreign markets and domestic feed processing factories. Therefore, prices are expected to keep rising, maize entrepreneurs forecast.
Myanmar exported 1.8 million tonnes of maize to Thailand this year. The majority of them were delivered to foreign markets through maritime channels, according to the Ministry of Commerce. — TWA/KK
