Myanmar opened the U-15 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship (OAOC) at Ngwesaung beach over 150 miles west of Yangon yesterday with the participation of over 130 sailors from 16 countries.
Host Myanmar also fielded an 18-member team – 10 boys and eight girls — in the sailing event whose goal includes the development of country’s tourism industry and sailing sports.
After the team-wise introduction process, President of Myanmar Yachting Federation U Hpone Kyaw Moe Myint and Vice-Chair of International Optimist Dinghy Association gave speeches.
A public area is set up at Ngwe Saung Yacht Club and Resort for spectators of the six-day event from 11 to 16 November.
Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship is a yachting event recognized by International Optimist Dinghy Association.
Myanmar Yachting Federation hopes that the yachting event at a famous beach resort in Ayeyawady Region will arouse public interest in the sports, strengthen youth development programs and develop yachting infrastructure and facilities and tourism.
