It is necessary to conduct the forestry undergraduate and post-graduate courses as well as turn out BSc forestry professionals, said Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at the centenary of forestry at the University of Forestry and Environmental Science (Yezin) in Zeyathiri Township of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area yesterday morning.
SAC Joint Secretary Lt-Gen Ye Win Oo, Council member Mahn Nyein Maung, Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Planning and Finance U Win Shein, Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi and Union Minister for Education Dr Nyunt Pe cut the ribbon to open the centennial celebration of the forestry education.
The Senior General unveiled the plaque of the centennial ceremony and sprinkled scented water on it.
In his speech, the Senior General said that everybody knows forests in Myanmar are sound foundations for sustainable development of the country as well as root causes to develop socioeconomic life of the people and create job opportunities for them. The Indian government handed over Myanmar’s forest management authority to the Myanmar government in 1922. So, the Myanmar government formed the Burma Forest Services. Moreover, the Forestry Department was established under the Faculty of Sciences at Yangon University in 1923 to turn out those who would serve the forestry services. In 1958, the Faculty of Forestry was set up.
The Institute of Forestry was formed as a professional institute in 1922 and then it was upgraded to a university in 2003. Moreover, it was reconstituted as the University of Forestry and Environmental Science in 2017. The statistics stated that the university has turned out 3,052 graduates till 2023 including 353 female graduates.
As part of improving the education sector, the university conducted a master’s course in forestry in 1996, including MSc (Forestry) and MSc (Forest Products). Hence, the university produced 62 MSc graduates and 17 diploma holders, totalling 79.
The university has turned out undergraduates, post-graduates and diploma holders. Now, the university has been formed with faculty members who secured doctoral degrees from foreign countries and experiences. Hence, the university is capable of turning out doctoral experts. The Senior General urged officials to produce experts specializing in the tropical and monsoon regions to keep abreast of the international community.

Moreover, the Senior General stressed the need to enhance the capacity of faculty members, provide assistance for them to conduct academic and research measures and assist in securing skills and experiences in combing the practical and theoretical processes. The Senior General presented K10 million in honour of the centenary of forestry to Rector Dr Khin Maung Hsint of Forestry and Environmental Science.
The Senior General presented prizes to first-prize winners in the university and high school-level poem, article, quiz and essay contests to mark the centenary of forestry.
SAC Vice-Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Senior General Soe Win presented second prizes to relevant winners and Joint Secretary Lt-Gen Ye Win Oo, third prizes to the winners.
Artistes from the Fine Arts Department and students of the University of Forestry and Environmental Science entertained the Senior General and party with dances and songs. The Senior General presented the flower basket to the artistes and students. Then, the Senior General and party visited the booths of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation. — MNA/TTA
