Myanmar, Italian archaeologists conduct research on water supply, drainage systems in Bagan

Water supply and drainage facilities of Bagan era is being analyzed by archeologists from University of Marche, Italy in collaboration with their Myanmar counterparts from the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan branch) in Bagan ancient cultural zone, recognized as a World Heritage List by the UNESCO.
“In order to identify water supply networks and drainage routes, Dr Massimo Sarti from the University of Marche and archeologists from Myanmar jointly conducted a field study in July.
“Additionally, we are maintaining the water supply and drainage networks that we discovered during our field research. The Department of Irrigation and Water Utilization Management, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, is also participating in our efforts,” said Dr Min Swe, the deputy director from the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan branch).
Dr Massimo Sarti also advised the measures in case of flood and steps to be taken in the future. The team of Italy and Myanmar archeologists is also visiting Wetgyiann creek, Alaekan, Alanbagan, the Viewing Mound near Culamani Temple and the Emerald Lake to set records on water supply and drainage systems while conducting research on these assets. — ASH/TH
