Myanmar melons favoured by Chinese Market

Watermelon and muskmelon export to China this financial year is projected to comprise 600,000 tonnes, according to the Myanmar Fruit, Flower and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association.
About 200 to 300 lorries carrying watermelon enter Muse market on a daily basis during melon season. A ton of watermelon costs 3,500-4,000 yuan whereas the price of a ton of musk melon costs 2,000-3,000 yuan.
Watermelon and muskmelon made up 80 per cent of income earned from fruits and vegetables export, according to the Commerce Ministry.
The market is heavily dependent on the Chinese market.
Watermelon and muskmelon are mostly cultivated in Shan State, Mandalay and Sagaing regions. The next crop is scheduled for planting in September.
