As the market demand of Myanmar orchids (Thazin flower) is declining due to the lack of ceremonial events amid COVID-19 pandemic, the commercial producers have opted for an online platform in selling the flowers.
“During the huge bloom of flowers in the cold season, we could sell around 200 shoots each day and earn about K200,000,” said U Than Hlaing, a commercial producer of Thazin flower in Kyaukpyu Township in Rakhine State.
The price of Thazin flower has decreased from K1,000 per shoot to K7,00 this season, and new markets are being searched for the flowers in nearby townships of Taungup and Yambye.
Thazin is an orchid species, and it usually blooms in Nadaw and Pyatho months. Myanmar regards it as a royal flower. It is donated to Buddha image, and women love to put Thazin flowers on their hair.—Tin Tun OO, Phyo Wai Lin (IPRD)
