Myanmar takes part in virtual forum for ASEAN-China Social Development and Poverty Eradication

Myanmar joined 2020 Extraordinary ASEAN-China Social Development and Poverty Eradication Forum organized by the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC) yesterday. The virtual forum was also attended by the government officials from ASEAN member countries— Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, and Singapore— with the discussions about their efforts on poverty reduction during the COVID-19 crisis. Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development (LGOP) Director-General Ms Su Guoxia and Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Mr Kung Phoak delivered their opening remarks at the forum which was attended by 45 representatives of relevant organizations. The top officials from ASEAN member countries discussed their poverty alleviation efforts during the COVID-19 crisis. Director-General of Rural Development Department U Khant Zaw, in his capacity as the rotating chairperson of the Senior Officials Meeting on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (SOMRDPE) discussed Myanmar’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, experiences related to poverty reduction, and the COVID-19 Economic Relief Plan (CERP) of Myanmar.
He said that the SOMRDPE Myanmar has implemented the “Cash for Work Programme” and the “Village Revolving Fund Programme” during the COVID-19 crisis. The delegations from China-ASEAN Centre, UNDP, UNICEF, FAO, IFAD, WFP, World Bank and Asian Development Bank participated in the discussions, followed by the closing remarks of Cambodia’s Ministry of Rural Development Secretary of State Chivoan SAO, and the IPRCC Deputy Director General Dr TAN Weiping.—MNA (Translated by Maung Maung Swe)
