Myanmar to create opportunities for those with disabilities to enjoy equal rights in society

Myanmar is striving to create the opportunities for those with disabilities to enjoy equal term of rights in the society, Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Daw Myat Myat Ohn Khin said at the ceremony to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2014 held at Hotel Max in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.
She stressed the need to invite participation of the disabled persons in emergency response to disaster risk reduction, adding that it needs to create opportunities for those with disabilities to apply modern technology in line with the motto of the day: “sustainable development: the promise of technology”.
UNFPA Resident Representative Ms. Janet E. Jackson, read the message sent by the secretary-general of the United Nations.
Union Ministers U Hla Tun, U Khin Yi and U Soe Win presented prizes to winners in the open, ministerial and university level article contests and basic education level essay contest in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2014.
Union Minister Dr Daw Myat Myat Ohn Khin and deputy minister Daw Su Su Hlaing awarded outstanding persons.
Myanmar signed the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities on 7 December 2011.
