Myat Mawtin Pagoda welcomes nearly 500,000 pilgrims in Jan-Aug

According to the Pagoda Board of Trustees, Myat Mawtin Pagoda in Ayeyawady Region welcomed almost 500,000 pilgrims from January to August 2024. The annual Myat Mawtin Buddha Pujaniya Festival is held from the 1st Waxing of Tabaung to the Fullmoon of Tabaung, attracting most of the pilgrims during this period.
“Pilgrims from across the nation come to pay homage at Myat Mawtin Pagoda. From January 2024 to date, we have welcomed over 500,000 pilgrims. March, during the Pagoda’s Buddha Pujaniya Festival, sees the highest number of visitors. Pilgrim numbers are also high from January until the festival in March. Currently, during Lent, we see over 1,000 pilgrims on Sabbath days and around 200 on regular days,” said a member of the Pagoda’s board of trustees.
As part of a five-year plan running from 2022 to 2026, the four pagoda platform are under renovation. The religious hall is being enlarged to accommodate more pilgrims, and accessible accommodation facilities are under construction at present. — ASH/MKKS
