Container trucks are seen on the Myawady-Kawkareik Asia Road on 4 January.

The Myawady-Kawkareik Asia Highway reopened at 3 pm on 4 January after it had been closed for 40 days, according to truck drivers.
“We are now able to drive and were released from 20 days of suffering. Perishable goods have gone to waste. It is a loss for traders,” said truck driver Ko Tun Kyaw.
“The flow of goods has come back to normal due to the reopening of the road,” Ma Wah Wah, a Thai-Myanmar freight forwarder, told the GNLM.
The Myawady-Kawkareik Asia Highway was temporarily blocked due to the clashes on 22 December in Kayin State and the explosion of a bridge near the Tawnaw waterfall. The drivers on the Myawady-Kawkareik road had to stop over at the arrival point and the drivers who had to travel in time had to use Htaw Kaw Koe road when the Asia Highway was blocked.
Hundreds of trucks, passenger buses and private cars were stranded on the Highway and the drivers of the trucks carrying fruits had to sell them at whatever price they were offered, it is learnt.—TWA/MKKS
