ONIONS from Myittha, a township in Kyaukse District, Mandalay Region, have sold well in the domestic market, local merchants say.
Onions are mainly sold along Merchant Road in Mandalay and are popular among buyers from Shan State, Bhamo, Katha, Htigyaing, Indaw and Sagaing regions.
The market has seen more demand this month for this kind of kitchen crop. One pyi of small-sized onions (about 2.13 kg or 4.69 pounds) is currently sold for Ks3,000 in the market. The selling prices for a pyi of middle-sized onions is Ks2,500, while large-sized onions are worth Ks2,000 per pyi.
Onion prices have increased since July of this year due to dwindling stocks. The price of onions has been on the rise because many onion plantations were destroyed by flooding in July, an onion merchant said.
Myanmar also exports onions to neighbouring China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan.
