The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation announced that 14,000 acres in Homalin Township, Homalin District, Sagaing Region, have been designated as the “Nangsapi Protected Public Forest” as of 6 September 2024, under Section 6 (e) of the Forestry Law 2018.
The ministry designates protected and reserved forests to preserve water resources and watersheds, support a stable ecosystem, meet local needs for forest products like timber and bamboo, conserve biodiversity, and maintain favourable weather conditions for agriculture.
The establishment of the Nangsapi Protected Public Forest is expected to safeguard valuable timber species in the area, such as teak, ironwood, and gumkino. Additionally, as the forest is connected to the Htamanthi Wildlife Reserve, it will help protect the habitats of rare species, including tigers, elephants, gaurs, pandas, monkeys, sambars, deer, and wild boars. The protection of watershed areas for Nangsapi Creek, Nangpagun Creek, Nangsale Creek, Nanghlaw Creek, and Nangkwakmonan Creek will help prevent siltation and erosion, increase forest cover and forest products, balance the climate, and improve the ecosystem. — MNA/TMT
