New playgrounds, parks to be built in Yangon

THE Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) will build six new playgrounds and upgrade nine playgrounds this fiscal year.
“During the period from 2014-2015 to 2016-2017, the committee has been upgrading nine playgrounds and building six new playgrounds. YCDC will renovate 11 parks for public recreation, while two new parks are also being built. Lately, the parks inside and outside the city of Yangon are being renovated by respective development departments. Most parks are not charging any entrance fees. Some old parks could not be renovated until now,” said by U Khin MaungMyint from Bocho Ward,Bahan township.
There are 63 parks within YCDC’s jurisdiction. Ten parks were upgraded in 2013-2014, plus six in 2014-2015 and seven in 2015-2016. In the same period, 22 parks were renovated, and 13 parks were maintained. There are also five parks that need maintenance. Similarly, 100 playgrounds were renovated: 21 in 2011-2012, 18 in 2012-2013, 33 in 2013-2014 and11 in 2014-2015. There are 17 playgrounds that still require maintenance, according to the Parks and Playgrounds Department under YCDC.
“We have short-term, medium-term and long-term plans to both upgrade or renovate the parks and playgrounds as well as to build new ones. Besides, we are also maintaining them on a regular basis in such a way as to suit the relaxation and recreation needs of peopleo f all ages. We have to do all these things under budget constraints. I think the public must also cooperate with us.
For example, they must abide by the rules and regulations. If people cooperate, abiding by rules and regulations, parks and playgrounds will last longer,” said an official from the Parks and Playgrounds Department under YCDC.—MyanmaAlin
