The 10th anniversary of the non-formal basic education project was held with the aim of supporting the Myanmar literacy movement at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of Yangon University on 31 March morning.
Present at the ceremony were Speaker of Yangon Region Hluttaw U Tin Maung Tun, Region Social Affairs Minister U Naing Ngan Lin, departmental officials, members of UNICEF and UNESCO, World Education, partner organisations, donors, outstanding teachers, students and their families.
Speaking on the occasion, U Tin Maung Tun said the non-formal basic education began in the 2008-2009 academic year, and the Education Ministry and the UNICEF jointly launched the initial programme in five townships.
In the 2017-2018 academic year, the project covered 93 townships. Kyaikhto, Sittway and Pyay implemented the project for 10 consecutive years. A video on the 10-year accomplishments of the project was then shown to the attendees.
U Tin Maung Tun and U Naing Ngan Lin presented certificates of honour to the donors. International adviser of Thailand Ms Kannikar Yeamgeasorn, on behalf of the donors, gave the vote of thanks.
Prizes were then given to the outstanding students.—Myanmar News Agency
