Onion growers look to expand export market

A workshop to expand export markets for Myanmar onions and improve cultivation, staged by the Trade Promotion Department, took place at the city hall in Mandalay on 8 April.
Mandalay Region Minister for Planning and Economy U Aung Zan delivered an opening address while Director-General U Myint Soe of the department spoke about expanding onion markets and the development of onion cultivation.
The chairman of the Myanmar Onion, Garlic and Kitchen Crops Exporters Association and officials discussed cultivation in Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions.
Deputy Head of Mandalay Region Cooperative Department Daw Nu Nu Win explained the formation of cooperative production societies and disbursement of loans to farmers.
Officials discussed cultivation techniques for onion plants, pests and germs, value-added onion foods, and market prospects of Myanmar’s onion.
Myanmar exported 35,358 tons of onion to India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and China in the 2014-15 fiscal year.–Thiha Ko Ko (Mandalay)
