In a bid to minimize the use of chemical fertilizer owing to high prices in the international market, organic fertilizer including compost of green manure, farmyard manure and crop residues will be utilized in the coming 2020 monsoon rice cultivation season, said Chairman U Aung Myo Oo of pilot-project for agricultural research station.
That project will be implemented at Yunshan agricultural research station in Yedashe, Bago Region. It will commence in March 2022.
Organic fertilizer practice is essential when the prices of fertilizer soared to multiple-year highs in international market. The agricultural sector could face input burden from exorbitant prices of imported fertilizer. The compost of green manure is the simplest, eco-friendly and least costly way for agricultural nutrients and it helps reduce the use of chemical fertilizer about 50 per cent, he elaborated.
“The land deterioration is attributed to the agricultural pollution. Sustainable soil management is crucial in agriculture. This way, high yield and quality crops can be expected. The stakeholders in the supply chains have to exert efforts to boost the production,” U Ye Min Aung, president of Myanmar Rice Federation. The pilot project for Agricultural Research Station began in 2020, covering Thabyaytan village in Yedashe Township as Area 1, DaikU Township as Area 2 and Shansu village, Thayawady Township, Bago Region as Area 3.—Ko Naing (Bago)/GNLM
