Over 1,000 animals protected in sanctuaries

There are 11 sanctuaries sheltering over 1,000 animals in Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Bago, Magway and Sagaing regions, according to All Myanmar Theravada Buddhists Federation and Sasana Nuggaha Association for Borders, Hilly Regions and Coastal Areas (Mandalay).
“Many animals are protected under the Metta (loving kindness) and Garuna (compassion) of Sayadawgyi. There are 11 sanctuaries in five regions. There are over 600 cattle, 200 goats and over 1,000 animals including turkey, chicken, duck, goose, Muscovy duck, rabbit, guinea pig and pigeon,” said U Hla Win, chairman of the association.
Currently, the 11 sanctuaries — Sedawlay sanctuary in Patheingyi Township, Sedawgyi sanctuary in Madaya Township, Marle Nattaung sanctuary in Singu Township and Zayetkwin sanctuary in Thabeikkyin Township of Mandalay Region, Ywathitkalay sanctuary in Sagaing Kaunghmudaw, three sanctuaries in Debayin, Aunglan monastery sanctuary in Aunglan Township, Kathitwine sanctuary in Bago Township and Khit Aye Parahita sanctuary in Zeyathiri Township of Nay Pyi Taw — are home to over 1,000 animals.
The animals are kept naturally and officials feed them with vegetables donated by vendors from the near market.
“The animals are kept on natural pasture. We also urged the vendors to pack the vegetable waste hygienically and we get these vegetables. Then, we feed the animals as a supplementary feed,” he added.
