A total of 4,089 acres of kitchen crops have been cultivated in Sagaing Region so far this year, said U Win Hlaing Oo, head of the Sagaing Region Agriculture Department.
The cultivation commenced in June 2021.
“The department mainly focuses on increasing the yield and low input cost. It encourages the growers to conduct Good Agricultural Practices and disseminate the technology of the GAP system. The number of acreages has increased this year. The growers also have access to pedigree seeds. Only fertilizer input is costly and therefore, we attempted to utilize the natural fertilizer and provided technical assistance,” said U Win Hlaing Oo.
The department has completed 331 acres of onion, 51 acres of dried chilli pepper, 3,387 acres of fresh chilli pepper and 320 acres of potato in the region, totalling 4,089 acres.
It covered 44 acres in Mawlaik, 90 in Khamti, 630 in Monywa, 826 in Yinmabin, 337 in Shwebo, 705 in Sagaing, 64 in Katha and 29 in Kawlin districts and 1,364 in Naga Self-Administered Zone, the regional department’s data showed.
The respective departments in each district of the Sagaing Region are sharing information on GAP, pest management technology and soil treatment to boost the yield and penetrate more markets. — Lu Lay/GNLM
