A total of 86 people were killed with 388 others injured in connection with 260 road accidents in Meiktila in 2020, according to a statement of No. 96 Traffic Police Force (Meiktila).
The number of road accidents in Meiktila township, Mandalay region, has also dropped in 2020 compared to last year’s same period. No 96 Traffic Police Force (Meiktila) is carrying out the traffic awareness campaign and taking action against the disobedient drivers every Sunday in the crowded areas to reduce the traffic accidents.
Besides, the awareness-raising is being carried out day and night at the road junctions and the traffic lights to make local motorcyclists and vehicle drivers aware of 2020 Motor Vehicle Management Laws. Because of this, the number of traffic accidents declined in 2020. In 2019, there were 366 car accidents with 136 deaths and 628 injuries, said Inspector Tun Min of No. 96 Traffic Police Force (Meiktila).
In 2020, the traffic police force conducted 64 times of traffic awareness campaigns. The police force also prosecuted 651 unruly vehicles and confiscated 33 vehicles without licences.
Deaths and injuries related to traffic accidents remain a significant concern in Myanmar. They were mostly caused by human errors such as over-speeding, negligent driving, drowsy driving, and others that include defective vehicles and severe weather.—Thein Myint Kyaw (Meiktila) (Translated by Hay Mar)
