Pigeon pea price on upward trend

The price of pigeon peas continued an upward trajectory in the domestic market. The price jumped to K3.655 million per tonne on 20 January 2024 from K3.57 million on 19 January and K3.496 million per tonne on 18 January. The pulse prices stood at K3.008 million per tonne of black gram (Fair Average Quality) and K3.298 million per tonne of black gram (Special Quality) on 20 January. Meanwhile, the FOB price rose to US$1,040-1,060 per tonne of black gram (FAQ) on 20 January 2024 from $960-980 per tonne at the end of December 2023. The pigeon pea price hit a record high of K4.15 million per tonne on 8 September 2023. The price surged from K1.815 million per tonne in the year’s corresponding period. The figure reflected a sharp increase of K1.755 million per tonne. — TWA/ KK
