Plans to patent Myanmar ethnic costumes and legislate intangible cultural heritage

According to the Department of Archaeology and National Museum, plans are underway to establish copyrights for Myanmar ethnic traditional costumes and to develop laws concerning intangible cultural heritage.
Traditional costumes of Myanmar’s ethnic groups will be categorized separately for daily wear and event wear. Additionally, copyrights for these conventional costumes and laws regarding intangible cultural heritage will be drafted.
“To explore and verify the origins of the costumes of Myanmar’s main ethnic groups – Mon, Bamar, Rakhine, Shan, Kachin, Kayin, Chin, and Kayah – and to ensure accuracy, the National Costume Determination Committee has been established and is currently operational. The goal is to patent each indigenous group’s costumes and designate them as intangible heritage,” said an official from the Department of Archaeology and National Museum.
It is also reported that, to ensure accurate designation of traditional costumes, historical documents, field survey records, and relevant indigenous literature and cultural groups will be consulted. — ASH/TKO
