Nay Pyi Taw, 2 March — President U Thein Sein visited Myanmar International Convention Centre (2) on Monday where a display of modern agricultural machinery was arranged to mark Peasant’s Day.
The displayed items included Korea-made machinery for harvesting crops such as groundnuts, potatoes and taro, as well as earth-moving equipment and tractors supplied by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
The President suggested the senior government officials at the event accelerating efforts to move from traditional to modern farming practices. He also greeted representatives of farm workers.
President U Thein Sein also looked around vegetables, fruits and other agricultural products, before seeing high-yield paddy seeds of the International Rice Research Institute that produced seeds suited for Myanmar’s varied geographic conditions and seasonal climates.
The President and officials arrived at the booth of Malar Myaing agricultural company to look at the packaging process of value-added fruits for export markets.
Local agricultural import companies also displayed their wares, alongside paddy sector development plans from Yezin Agriculture University, the Department of Water Resources Utilization, the Department of Settlement and Land Record, the Department of Irrigation, the Department of Agricultural Research, the Department of Industrial Crops Development and private companies.
