The Ministry of Rail Transportation signed a deal with China National Machinery Import Corporation-CMC on Thursday in Nay Pyi Taw to buy locomotive engines worth more than US$ 11million, according to ministry sources.
Out of the ministry’s 377 locomotive engines, more than 200 are outdated, an official of the ministry said.
The first three engines will arrive in Myanmar in November and the remainder in 2016.
The new locomotives will replace current engines running on routes in hilly regions, according to the ministry.
The Ministry of Rail Transportation bought about 100 air conditioned coaches from Japan in March to replace current ordinary coaches on Yangon’s circular railroad.
The Ministry spent $207 million of ODA loans from Japan to buy the coaches.
The coaches will arrive in Myanmar in September and the ministry will complete the replacement in 2015.
