According to the Yangon Region Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department (Water Resource), the re-excavation of the Ngamoeyeik Creek, which serves as a water outlet to prevent floods in Yangon Region, has been completed.
The Ngamoeyeik Creek spans 47 miles from the Ngamoeyeik Dam in Hlegu Township to the Ngamoeyeik Sluice Gate in Dagon Myothit (East) Township. Due to silting, the 22-mile-long upper part of the creek required re-excavation. The 25-mile-long lower part of the creek already has a good flow of water. This re-excavation is the first since the completion of the Ngamoeyeik Dam in 1995.
The Ngamoeyeik Creek flows through Hlegu Township, Dagon Myothit (East) Township, Dagon Myothit (North) Township, South Okkalapa Township, Thingangyun Township, and Pazundaung Township, eventually joining the confluence of the Bago River and the Yangon River.
The Ngamoeyeik Dam, built on the Ngamoeyeik Creek, supplies 130 million gallons of drinking water daily to Yangon Region residents and irrigates over 30,000 acres of agricultural land annually. — ASH/MKKS
