The Red Cross Society of China donated US$ 100,000 to the Myanmar Red Cross Society for use in providing humanitarian aid to flood victims in Myanmar. The donation was made at the Myanmar Red Cross Society (Yangon) office on Strand Road at 3pm yesterday.
China’s Ambassador to Myanmar Mr. Hong Liang gave the donation on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China, which was accepted by Myanmar Red Cross Society President Prof. Dr. Mya Thu and fulltime executive members. The People’s Republic of China has made several donations to the Myanmar Red Cross Society to support the humanitarian assistance provided in the flood-stricken areas in Myanmar. This is the fourth donation to be made.
Prof. Dr. Mya Thu, when asked about the donation made from the Red Cross Society of China, said, “The (Chinese) ambassador told us to use the money wherever it was needed. But I said there are many affected areas and asked him which areas he wanted us to use the money and how. The ambassador replied it was our decision to make. He said he knew about Kayin State, Mon State and Bago Region. He wanted us to use it in the areas that were hit the hardest. We are doing what we can to quickly provide emergency supplies. We are also holding meetings in anticipation of a worsening situation. We are prepared.”
She continued and said, “The People’s Republic of China, via the Chinese Ambassador himself, has provided donations to the Myanmar Red Cross Society whenever a natural disaster has occurred. There are no restrictions concerning the donations and they admire our processes. From our side, we provide a report of how and where their donations have been used.”
The Myanmar Red Cross Society has been responding to the flooding in the different areas of Myanmar since they began on 28 July.
The Myanmar Red Cross Society has opened an emergency Red Cross command center and has received information from Red Cross volunteers in the flood-affected areas, sent appropriate rescue equipment to the flood-stricken areas, and accepted donations for the flood-affected areas at the Red Cross office.—Myanmar News Agency
