Refresher course for sub-commissions for by-elections opened

A refresher course for election sub-commissions at different levels in regions & states to hold by-elections was opened at Grand Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw at 9 am yesterday.
At the ceremony, U Hla Thein, the chairman of the Union Election Commission said: “In the by-elections to be held on April 1, 2017, over 2 million people eligible to vote are required to choose 19 parliamentarians out of 95 candidates and by-elections will be held in accord with electoral standards — transparency, freedom and justice — which will be trusted and accepted by the public. Hence, the present refresher course was conducted with the intention of upgrading the capacities of election sub-commissions at different levels to the climax in holding by-elections in 2017.
The project of conducting the present course was aimed at reaching over 1,500 members of election sub-commissions. We express our thanks towards Resident representative of International IDEA, Mr Mark McDowell, and members for their cooperation to conduct this course.
Mr Mark McDowell also clarified the process of election under the cooperation with Union Election Commission with curriculum to be conducted in the course explained by secretary of the UEC.
The electoral refresher course will be conducted twice among the two groups under the 7 syllabuses for election sub-commissions at different levels in Regions & States to hold by-elections in 2017. Today’s course was attended by 46 trainees representing election sub-commissions at different levels in Regions & States with the second training to be attended by 40.
The trainees will conduct on to wards and village-tracts’ sub-commissions, in-charges and members of the voting booths, according to the UEC.—Myanmar News Agency
