SAC Chairman Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing inspects upgrading of Aung San Stadium

Chairman of State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, accompanied by SAC Member Admiral Tin Aung San, Joint Secretary Lt-Gen Ye Win Oo, Union Ministers U Thaung Han, U Min Thein Zan, U Shwe Lay and Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, senior officers from the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Office, the Yangon Command Commander, the mayor and relevant officials inspected the upgrading of the Aung San Stadium in Mingala Taungnyunt Township of Yangon Region yesterday morning.
First, the Union Ministers, the Yangon Region chief minister, Director Maj-Gen Myo Thant of the Directorate of Military Engineering and officials explained the data and history of the stadium, completed works based on the instructions made by the Senior General in 2021, and the formation of the committee on upgrading the stadium, the construction of the underpass and overpass, and estimated plans to construct an indoor stadium with an audience capacity of 3,000 through PowerPoint presentations and video clips.
In his response, the Senior General said the Aung San Stadium is a historic ground for its name, tradition and terms and also a place where the success of Myanmar’s sports was initiated. Consideration must be given to holding the Olympic games after meeting the international standards. It must arrange to hold international competitions for eight sports at the stadium. It should take into account the need to create a car parking and public area. There should be proper cooperation works between the departments concerned, the regional government and the Directorate of Military Engineering.
Then, the Senior General viewed the model of the stadium and instructed the necessary things.
The Senior General and party inspected the Aung San Stadium by car and indoor stadium.
Aung San Stadium was established in 1906 and its original name was Burma Athletic Association Ground (BAA). In addition to popular domestic and international sports events, a special commemorative exhibition, the Holiday on Ice, was held in the stadium. On 17 October 1953, the original name was changed to Aung San Stadium. The upgrading of the historic stadium aims to hold national-level and international sports events. When completed, it can accommodate over 30,000 audiences and the indoor stadium will have an audience capacity of 3,000 people. —MNA
