Salt is fetching a good price in Mon State, and the price is expected to remain high, salt producers said.

Nevertheless, the salt production businesses in Mon State are facing challenging situations during difficult times, according to National Enlightenment Institute (NEI).
The main burdens for the businesses are low production, hidebound attitude in manufacturing and limits of industrialization in the underdeveloped areas. This being so, some businesses are hard to survive from failing the needs.
Additionally, locally produced salt cannot compete against the imported salt in quality. The local products are still far away from exports as well.
The COVID-19 pandemic shut down the schools, restaurants and other events in 2019. Consequently, the salt demand significantly dropped, and salt is stored — the stockpiling caused financial loss for the businesses.
This year, the salt production businesses face challenges due to political development, banking restriction and transport problems, as per the NEI.
Mon State yearly produces 40,000 tonnes of sun-dried salt beyond magnesium chloride (MgCl2), iodized salt (I2) and table salt (NaCl).
The 2019-2020 statistics showed 14 iodine salt processing plants and one factory each for magnesium chloride (MgCl2) and table salt (NaCl) production, with the production capacity of 60 tonnes of magnesium chloride, 204 tonnes of table salt and 12,132 tonnes of iodized salt.
In a bid to boost production quality, driers, labs and product packaging techniques are still required. Furthermore, there is raw material shortage problem due to the low production of plain sundried salt, as per the NEI.
National Enlightenment Institute has been actively building capacity of local communities and institutions to strengthen governance structures through public policy research, training and advocacy, based in Mon State. — NN/GNLM
