The gold and silver embroidery course, a traditional Myanmar art form, will be offered at the Saungder Weaving and Vocational Institute in Amarapura Township, Mandalay Region, according to Daw Khin Win Kyi, Vice-Principal of the institute. This free, three-month course will begin on 1 September, and applications are currently being invited.
“The gold and silver embroidery course will be offered for the third time as it becomes increasingly popular in formal wear. As a traditional handicraft arts centre, we offer this course three times a year to preserve this art form. The course covers basic art science and the terminology used in embroidery materials. Students will learn practical skills, such as outlining embroidery patterns. Upon completion, graduates will have the opportunity to pursue careers in the gold and silver embroidery industry,” said Daw Khin Win Kyi.
Although gold and silver embroidery are not officially recognized as one of Myanmar’s Traditional Arts or “Ten Arts and Crafts,” they are still considered highly skilled crafts due to the drawing skills required.
Only five trainees will be accepted for the course. Applicants must be between 16 and 25 years old and have completed basic primary education. In addition to providing free dormitory accommodation, the training programme offers trainees a monthly stipend during the course. The age requirements for admission may be waived for those with a genuine passion for gold and silver embroidery. — ASH/TRKM
