Seismometers and GPS devices installed in Yangon Region

Yangon Region has initiated the installation of seismometers and GPS devices across six townships, aimed at studying ground movement, subsidence, and elevation. This installation work began in the second week of September.
Currently, the installation of these devices is underway at Maha Wizaya Pagoda in Dagon Township. The six townships involved in this project include Bahan Township, Dagon Township, Lanmadaw Township, Latha Township, Pabedan Township, and Kyauktada Township.
The Federation of Myanmar Engineers and the Myanmar Earthquake Committee are collaborating on these projects to study land displacement, subsidence, and elevation within these townships.
An agreement was negotiated in March 2023 between Maha Wizara Pagoda’s board of trustees, the Federation of Myanmar Engineers, and the Myanmar Earthquake Committee, which has led to the installation of seismometers and GPS devices inside the pagoda.
The installation will continue in Shwedagon Pagoda and Alampya Pagoda, followed by Lanmadaw, Latha, Pabedan, and Kyauktada townships.
These devices will provide crucial data on ground motion in the area where they are installed over six months to a year, aiding earthquake mitigation research. — ASH/KZL
