Due to Typhoon Yagi in the South China Sea and a small storm in the Bay of Bengal, continuous rainfall and flooding have affected Nay Pyi Taw Council Area and other states and regions.
The torrential rain has caused water levels in creeks and rivers to rise, resulting in flooding across wards and villages in 56 townships within Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Kayah State, Kayin State, Bago Region, Magway Region, Mandalay Region, Mon State, Shan State, and Ayeyawady Region. The flood has damaged roads, bridges, houses, departmental buildings, schools, and other structures.
A total of 2,116 houses have collapsed, and 158,373 homes have been flooded in these 56 townships. Consequently, 438 relief camps have been established by the relevant state and regional governments. Personnel from the Tatmadaw, police, firefighters, Red Cross members, and volunteers are conducting rescue and relief operations for 42,858 households comprising 163,710 individuals.
As of 4 pm on 16 September, reported data indicates that 226 people have been killed and 77 others are missing.
Furthermore, infrastructure and crop cultivation have been severely affected in 84 townships across Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Kayin State, Bago Region, Magway Region, Mandalay Region, Shan State, and Ayeyawady Region. The damage includes 117 departmental offices and buildings, 1,040 schools, 386 religious buildings, roads, bridges, power towers, and telecom towers.
