Local farmers in Taungtha Township, Mandalay Region, planted 2,288 acres of summer sesame in irrigated areas this year, compared with 566 acres last year.
At present, about 50 percent of the sesame crop is being harvested. Local farmers can earn increased income from summer sesame due to rising prices.
“Thanks to sinking more and more tube-wells in the township, local people dare to grow summer sesame on the extended farmlands,” said Staff Officer U Phone Maung of the Department of Agriculture. “The sesame yields 17 baskets per acre.”
A local farmer said, “I grew a 3-acre sesame plantation. I have harvested my all fields. Now, I sell red sesame for K50,000 per basket and black sesame for K60,000 per basket.”–Kyaw Myo Naing (Taungtha)
