False news circulating on social media has accused Tatmadaw of occupying Sittway University, positioning themselves at vantage points in the town, and using students, teachers and faculty members as human shields against the Arakan Army’s intensifying offence on 27 November.
Authorities discredited false news by clarifying that Tatmadaw troops were stationed outside the university premises to ensure the security of students and people inside during school time.
Malicious media outlets intentionally spread fake reports on social media sites like Facebook, aiming to create misconceptions regarding Tatmadaw among international observers and the public.
During an incident at Loikaw University a couple of weeks ago, terrorists abducted education staff and students, saying “they were rescuing them”, and reportedly tried to use them as human shields.
