From 12 December, Myanmar citizens in Singapore will have to pay income tax and they will not be able to renew their passports unless they provide tax payment receipts, according to the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore.

The Ministry of Planning and Finance made an announcement that Myanmar citizens living abroad will be required to pay income tax on their salaries with effect from 1 October 2023. Following this, the Myanmar Embassy issued such a statement.

Consular services and passport renewals will only be extended to those who have paid their income tax due for the period from October to the time they come to the embassy, and monthly tax payable is 2 percent on the specified income rates depending on the type of residence permit, it sated.

“To renew passports, we have to show tax payment documents. Tax is a thing that has to be paid in every country in the world,” said a Myanmar worker in Singapore.

Student Pass holders are exempt from income tax if they can produce letters of endorsement from their colleges, the embassy said.
