Tea leaves from Homalin fetches handsome price

The tea leaves from Homalin township, Sagaing region have fetched a handsome price, it is learnt.
“The price of tea leaves in these days is good. The price of fresh tea leaves is sold at K1,500 per viss. Now, the tea leaves are not as plentiful as spring. But, there are many fresh tea leaves stored because of the rain. The tea leaves season is over. The fresh tea leaves are consuming mostly in ceremonies,” said Daw Su Su Htway, the head of the agriculture department from Homalin Township.
The price of Homalin township fresh tea leave was set at K1,300 per viss in October, 2021. Now, the price has increased to K1,500 per viss.
The tea leaves from Homalin township are conveyed to Kalay, Tamu, Mawlaik, Monywa and Mandalay markets.
During 2021-2022 financial year, the tea leaves has been cultivated in Sagaing region since June, 2021. Currently, the agriculture department cultivated 290 acres of tea leaves in Mawlaik, 9,694 acres in Hkamti, 911 acres in Naga region, 487 acres in Katha and 564 acres in Kawlin districts, according to the Sagaing Region Agriculture Department.
There are some 8,900 hectares of tea planted across Myanmar and most of them were exported to Chinese market. Although local tea is exported to Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore, the largest market remains China. — Lu Lay/GNLM
