A total of 169 Myanmar workers — 92 men, 67 women and ten children — who were convicted in Thailand were transferred to Myanmar on 8 June by the Thai authority. They had been detained for various reasons in 14 districts of southern Thailand and were released from the immigration prisons in Ranong District after they had served their sentences.
The transferred Myanmar nationals were transported to Kawthoung from Ranong, Thailand, by boat, and they were provided with shoes, hand sanitizers, masks, foods, and COVID-19 awareness leaflets by the Migrant Resource Centre FED-MRC of the Education and Development Foundation. It is learned that the returning Myanmar migrant workers were from Taninthayi Region, mostly from Kawthoung District.
Returnees will undergo medical check-ups for five days at quarantine centres in Khamaukgyi and Pulone Tontone, said an aid provider. It is reported that Thai authorities are arresting Myanmar migrant workers who are entering Thailand in various ways, and most of the arrested Myanmar workers were illegal immigrants. — TWA/GNLM
