The will of the people is the basis of government authority

The establishment of democracy in Myanmar can be seen as a significant achievement of our times and as a product of the call for democratic change which started in 1988.
Democracy is universally recognized as ideal because it provides a core value for the protection and realization of human rights. In democracy, people are entitled to choose their destiny and have a say in how they should be governed. The primary objective of the Union Election Commission is to ensure that the electorate can perceive elections as transparent, credible and inclusive. It is therefore imperative for UEC to stay the course.
According to the United Nations General Assembly, “democracy is a universal value based on the freely expressed will of people to determine their political, economic, social and cultural systems and their full participation in all aspects of their lives.”
For democracy to thrive, parliaments should promote the checks and balances, strengthen the voice of the civil society, promote human rights and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes, especially women’s participation in political and public arenas. In addition, the media should be allowed to enjoy freedom of expression and have access to information.
Now the people have already had the sense of whether the representatives they sent to parliament five years ago are truly representing their will. The parliament’s motto that reads “The will of the people, the will of the parliament” should no way be empty words.
