A tornado hit Kanyingon village and Nyaungnigon village in Yangon Region’s Kungyangon Township on the early morning of 26 July and left more than 70 houses destroyed. Government departments and social relief associations have jointly provided help to affected people.
Two fire engines from Kungyangon Township Fire Station and one fire engine from Kawhmu Township Fire Station, along with firefighters, carried out search and rescue works and clearing, and the Myanmar Fire Services Department issued a press release.
Thirty-four houses collapsed entirely in the natural disaster, and the roofs of 37 houses got damaged, with up to 300 people affected, said an official from the Aryupala association.
“According to residents, the tornado lasted just two or three minutes. It swept like this within the moment. Thirty-four houses collapsed completely, and the roofs of 37 houses were damaged. More than 300 people were affected. No one gets injured severely, just minor cuts and bruises. Departments and social relief associations have already cleared trees that blocked streets and fell over houses. For those whose houses collapsed, a temporary shelter has been set up at a monastery under the management of administrative authority,” he said.
Social relief associations from the Yangon Region have prepared to provide necessary assistance, such as food, clothes, and tarps, to affected people. — MT/ZS/ED
